Summer Show & Critic's Choice
June 23 ~ August 19, 2006
The Summer Show: works by The Dallas Contemporary members & Critic's Choice: Suzanne Weaver, Associate Curator of Contemporary Art at the Dallas Museum of Art
The Summer Show is the way to see a large body of work by working Dallas artists. The expanse of works attests to the pure joy of creation ~ proof these artists must make art! Presented as shows-within-a-show, the exhibition features landscape, still life, the figure, abstractions, photographs, and works on paper.
For Critic's Choice, Suzanne Weaver, Associate Curator of Contemporary Art at the Dallas Museum of Art, will be selecting five (5) member artists of merit to each have a small focus exhibition in Hallworks 2007 at The Dallas Contemporary.
Mix! artist Mimi Kato photographs
Experiencing a cultural duality, San Antonian Kato captures her double persona based on whether she's her American or Japanese self. Her refined black-and-white photography expresses her dual life and growing concerns that globalization and technology are fast destroying our cultural uniqueness.
Hallworks artist David Witherspoon assemblage & video
Selected by Arthouse Director Sue Graze at last year's Summer Show / Critic's Choice, Witherspoon's assemblage and video, called Feed, deal with excess consumption.
3 D on Swiss artist Jimmy Kuehnle outdoor sculpture
Outdoors in the garden will appear San Antonio artist Kuehnle's extravagantly constructed bicycles. Two of his bicycle sculptures based on drawings will be outdoors and another, a conglomeration of television monitors, will be stationed in the gallery. During opening day, Friday, June 23, Kuehnle will ride one of his bicycles on a prescribed route in Dallas. Watch for his over-the-top vehicle making its way on the city's streets.
