The Dallas Contemporary

Art Think is an interdisciplinary education program using contemporary art as a springboard to critical thinking. Designed to increase test scores, improve communication skills, increase the ability to problem solve and give form to emotions and imagination, the program adds to a student’s creative thinking skills.

Statistics prove visual art plays an important role in the learning process; a National College Board study reveals that students with four years of art education score better in verbal and math by 51 and 31 points respectively on the SAT exam. Yet, limited budgets continue to burden schools, and art is one of first courses cut when resources are scarce. A recent panel review by Texas Commission on the Arts applauds Art Think’s powerful potential ~ A multi-disciplined program designed to benefit students on a number of planes. . . . a very sophisticated approach to arts education.

Art Think offers a fresh collaborative approach, using the method of Socratic inquiry by teaching students how to look at, think about and talk about art and their own lives. It is a powerful program that teaches the classroom teacher new skills, strengthens existing school and youth group activities and adds a new dimension to school programming.

Created in collaboration with Philip Yenawine of Visual Thinking Strategies, Art Think puts Dallas in a national arena. This prototype curriculum actively engages students in looking at contemporary art as it relates to their everyday lives ~ a totally new approach!

Art Think is Dallas Contemporary’s educational focus ~ We have an off-site program for the DISD schools to educate high schoolers in contemporary art using the Art Think approach. We also host field trips throughout the school year and summer that engages even the youngest students in Art Think.
